Hi, I’m Sarah Jenkins, the home cook behind Recipe Homely. If you’ve ever started an online recipe at 5:12 PM and realized halfway through that it needs a specialty pan, three obscure spices, and an hour you do not have, you are my people.

This site is for the nights when you want something homemade, but you also want it to be realistic. The kind of cooking that happens in a real-life kitchen, with a busy schedule, a slightly chaotic counter, and at least one picky eater giving you the side-eye.

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

How It Started

I grew up in a loud, food-centric family where the kitchen was the heart of everything. Helping my grandmother cook was a daily ritual: hands in flour, a pot simmering on the stove, and a running commentary about how a pinch of this or that could fix nearly anything.

Fast forward a few years and life got fuller, faster. As a working mother of two, I finally understood the daily challenge of getting a wholesome dinner on the table by 6 PM. I wanted meals that tasted like love, without requiring a culinary degree, a second paycheck, or an extra hour I did not have.

Recipe Homely started out of pure frustration with recipes that looked gorgeous online but fell apart in real life. Too many steps. Too many dishes. Vague instructions like “cook until done.” Ingredients that were impossible to find on a regular grocery run.

Timing was the biggest offender. A recipe would promise “20 minutes,” but by the time I chopped, sautéed, and waited for something to reduce, it was suddenly 45. That is not a small difference at dinnertime.

So I began doing what I do best: organizing, testing, and simplifying until the recipe worked consistently, every single time.

My Promise

I’m a self-taught cook with a strict rule: I don’t publish a dish until it’s been tested and approved in my own kitchen. Not a dreamy studio kitchen. Not a “chef’s pantry” stocked with every ingredient ever. Just my everyday setup, with the same time crunch and the same dinner-hour pressure you probably feel, too.

Most recipes go through multiple rounds here, usually at least two, and more if the timing is tight or a step feels even slightly unclear. I also pay attention to the leftovers, because plenty of weeknight cooking turns into next-day lunches. If something reheats poorly, dries out, or gets weird in the fridge, you will hear about it.

When I test recipes, I’m checking the real-life stuff that matters. Does the timing hold up on a weeknight? Can you make it with regular grocery store ingredients? Are the steps clear enough that you are not guessing? If there’s a smart shortcut, I’ll tell you. If something is fussy, I’ll either fix it or I won’t post it.

Substitutions matter, too. When I suggest a swap, it’s because I’ve tried it, or because it is a straightforward, reliable trade. If a substitution changes the texture or cook time, I will call that out so you can make the choice with confidence.

And yes, my recipes get the ultimate stamp of approval from my toughest critics: my kids. They are wonderfully honest, occasionally dramatic, and absolutely unwilling to eat something “weird.” If they’ll eat it happily and ask for it again, it’s a keeper.

What You’ll Find

Think of Recipe Homely as your friendly, practical cooking companion. I write the way I cook: warm, organized, and focused on helping you succeed the first time.

  • Approachable dinners that fit into busy weekdays, with clear steps and realistic timing.
  • Dependable desserts that make sense for home bakers, including options you can prep ahead.
  • Ingredient swaps and substitutions so you can use what you already have and still get great results.
  • Simple techniques explained without pretentious jargon, because confidence matters more than fancy words.
  • Family-friendly flavors with options to adjust spice, sweetness, and texture for different eaters.

Whenever a recipe has a “gotcha” moment, I call it out clearly. That might be when to stop cooking a sauce before it breaks, when onions are truly caramelized, or what “simmer until thick enough to coat a spoon” actually looks like. For meat, I lean on an instant-read thermometer when I can. For chicken, look for 165°F in the thickest part, avoiding the bone. A short rest helps the temperature even out before you slice.

My Mission

My mission is simple: to make everyday meals stress-free and delicious.

I believe a reliable, home-cooked meal is one of the easiest ways to bring people together, even if it’s just 20 minutes around the table before homework, bedtime routines, or the next work email. You do not need perfection. You need recipes you can trust.

So if you’re learning to cook, getting back into cooking, cooking for kids, cooking for one, or cooking while exhausted, you belong here.

A Bit About Me

When I’m not testing recipes, you’ll usually find me browsing local farmers’ markets or baking with my two children. I love simple seasonal ingredients, sturdy pans that can handle real life, and anything that makes a kitchen feel welcoming.

I also love a good shortcut when it truly works. Convenience is not cheating, and I will never shame you for using pre-cut veggies, jarred sauce as a starter, or rotisserie chicken on a Tuesday.

You’ll find a mix of classic comfort food and weeknight-friendly spins, plus a growing set of options for common needs. When a recipe is vegetarian, gluten-free, or easily adaptable, I label it clearly so you can find what fits your table.
